Here’s a little info to know me better…
I graduated from University of Victoria (B.C., Canada) School of Nursing in 2000. I was what they call a ‘mature student’, meaning I pursued higher education after living life a bit. I had two children at the time and was recently divorced. It was the hardest, most fulfilling thing I’ve ever done in my life.
I’m presently nursing in a home-like long term care facility of 100 residents, in a recently named ‘city’. It’s still a small Canadian town. It is challenging work and I love it. Most days. Some days I’d rather ditch it all and simply write for a living, but that’s not realistic at the moment.
I chose long term care over acute care simply because it suit me best. I started in psychiatry when I graduated because there were things I needed to learn. My last practicum shift was at Hospice and a patient I was caring for became psychotic. It was a complete mystery to me what I needed to know, how I needed to be, what I needed to do. This left enough of an impact for me to know there was lots I did not know. Well, aside from being such a rookie nurse! So off I went for a couple of years to nurse in psychiatry.
A lot has changed in my life since I graduated from nursing school but one thing has remained constant. Continuously striving for personal and professional growth.
